A long-standing commitment to sustainability is one thing. Having the right tools to turn that commitment into measurable results is another. For one restaurant, better visibility into water consumption helped uncover a persistent leak that could have wasted nearly 300,000 litres of water every month.

The challenge: A hidden leak with a significant impact

For a restaurant with an established sustainability strategy, managing water consumption was already an important priority. However, despite its commitment to reducing environmental impact, the business was experiencing an ongoing water leak that had remained unexplained.

Water was being lost at an estimated rate of 200–400 litres per hour. While this might not seem significant at first glance, the continuous loss added up to a substantial amount of wasted water and unnecessary costs.

The challenge was identifying where the water was going and what was causing the problem.

The solution: Turning water data into action

In February, the restaurant was onboarded to Smartvatten, gaining better visibility into its water consumption.

With Smartvatten's water intelligence solution supporting its water management efforts, the customer was able to investigate the ongoing water loss more effectively.

The investigation eventually revealed a surprisingly simple cause: a faulty toilet.

What had previously been an unexplained water loss could now be addressed through a targeted maintenance action.

The case demonstrates how improved visibility into water consumption can help businesses move from uncertainty to action, identifying problems that might otherwise continue unnoticed.

The results: Nearly 300,000 litres of potential water waste per month

The financial and environmental implications were significant.

At the upper end of the estimated leakage rate, the unresolved issue could have resulted in:

  • 288,000 litres of wasted water per month

  • Approximately €500 in unnecessary monthly water costs

  • Up to €6,000 in potential annual costs if the leak had continued at the same rate

Beyond the potential savings, the customer gained greater confidence in its ability to manage water consumption and identify opportunities for improvement.

Following the positive experience, the restaurant decided to upgrade to Smartvatten Pro, taking another step towards more proactive water management.

Small problems can have a big impact

A leaking toilet might seem like a minor maintenance issue. But when water flows continuously, even a relatively simple fault can create significant costs over time.

For businesses operating multiple facilities, having visibility into water consumption is essential for identifying inefficiencies, supporting sustainability objectives and reducing avoidable operating expenses.

This customer story highlights the value of turning water data into actionable insights.
